Q. How long has Wee Wonders been going for and when did it start?
A. Wee Wonders was started in 1995 at Foxhills in Surrey. It has developed from a coaching programme to a fully fledged national junior competition which continues to grow year on year.
Q. How has the competition grown over the years?
A. Once the word spread about a fun golf competition for 5-12 year olds we soon became a national event with the support of the PGA and The Golf Foundation and more recently, HSBC. Last year we had almost 3000 competitors.
Q. Has the Grand Final always been held at St. Andrews?
A. No, in the early days the Grand Final was held at Foxhills in Surrey. From 2003, we moved up to St. Andrews.
Q. How many Wee Wonders Finalists have represented GB & I in the US?
A. We have entered a full team of 12 children, 7 boys and 5 girls since 2003. In doing so we created the opportunity (and a record) for the youngest golfers ever to represent their country.
Q. How successful have Team GB & I been in the US Kids World Championships?
A. In 2003 the team finished 21st out of 50 teams, but in 2004 managed to come a fantastic 3rd place! 2005 saw Billy Spooner, aged 7, finish 2nd overall in his age group, a magnificent achievement.
Q. How many Wee Wonders have moved into the realm of professional golf?
A. During our 11 years of coaching and competition we have seen almost 20,000 talented young golfers. I know many have gone on to win tournaments at County and National level and many have progressed to the professional ranks.
Q. How long has HSBC sponsored Wee Wonders?
A. HSBC's sponsorship of the HSBC Wee Wonders Championships began in 2004 where they supported part of the event management of the Championships and the World Championships team. In 2005, HSBC significantly increased their investment into HSBC Wee Wonders Championships to include a state of the art website. This level of support has continued into 2008, during which they wish to drive participation in the Championships and create an even bigger impact on the junior golf arena.
